Hands-On Learning: Real-World Clinical Experience

Alverno Laboratories partners with USF for students to learn hands on how training in an operational laboratory. Our medical lab tech students complete their rotations at hospital laboratories managed by Alverno Laboratories in Crown Point, Dyer and Michigan City or its central laboratory in Hammond, Indiana.

Franciscan Health – Medical Laboratory Science Program 

This program is designed for students who complete three years of schooling at an affiliated/approved college or university who then transfer to the Medical Laboratory Science Program, which is a one year program that offers students the chance to train at an Alverno Laboratories hospital laboratory and its high volume central laboratory, both located in Northwest Indiana.  The lab handles more than 20 million tests each year. Students work with the latest technologies and testing methods in the clinical lab.

Students will be busy with laboratory learning and classroom study on Monday through Friday for a full 8 hour day.  Interns are expected to take frequent written and practical exams throughout the year. Upon completion of the internship, the intern will sit for a national board of certification exam. The Medical Laboratory Science Program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).

        • Eligible course expenses include:
        • Tuition and lab fees directly related to the course.
        • Books and all other fees are excluded.
        • Employee must request assistance before the start of class or the request may be denied.
        • Approved eligible expenses will be paid at 75% if the employee has been employed less than 3 years prior to the start date of the course.  If the individual has been employed 3 years or more prior to the start date of the course, the employee is eligible to receive 100% assistance to an annual calendar year limit of $5,000 for 90% FTE – 100% FTE and $2,500 for 50% FTE up to but not including 90% FTE.  FTE status is determined by the date that all required, completed forms are received in HR.  Dates of payments will be used to determine yearly limits.  Amounts paid for courses are excludable from the employee’s federal taxable income.
        • A transcript from the school is required to show satisfactory completion of the course (C or better for undergrad/ B or better for graduate under a common grading system or Pass under a Pass/Fail system).
        • Employees receiving tuition assistance must agree to remain with Alverno or an affiliated entity as a 50% FTE or greater, after completion of the course(s) for one year. Any employee resigning or involuntarily terminated before the expiration of the applicable period will be required to pay back assistance received on a pro-rated basis, unless the position is eliminated due to a reduction in force. (For example, if an employee resigns six (6) months after completion of a course he/she would be responsible to reimburse Alverno for one-half of the tuition.)
        • Should an employee’s employment status change to a non-benefit status anytime during the one-year commitment; the employee must repay on a pro-rated basis any tuition received in the last twelve months, unless the status change is due to a reduction in force.
