Alverno Laboratories
Articles & White Papers

With a talent shortage across various critical sectors, including the healthcare industry, Hammond-based Alverno Laboratories is finding ways to creatively attract talent. The company, comprised of 2,116 associates, currently has 288 open positions. In an effort to fill 29 critical midnight Medical Technologist (MT) and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) positions, Alverno is offering a $10,000 sign-on bonus between June 1st, 2021 and September 9th, 2021. Applicants can apply at  https://jobs.jobvite.com/alverno-laboratories/?nl=1 and to qualify for the bonus, they must be hired by September 9th, 2021 and commit to the organization for 13 months.

“Offering a sign-on bonus is one of the ways for us to get creative in attracting talent,”  explained Nicole Stokes, one of Alverno’s System Talent Acquisition Coordinators. “In our field, it’s great to have new challenges, and with this amount of vacant positions, it creates a lot of great opportunities for us to think outside of the box.”  A lack of qualified applicants in the clinical laboratory space has made it difficult to fill positions.

Alverno is affiliated with 39 education programs to support its staffing needs and partners with high schools, colleges, and universities across Indiana and Illinois to increase awareness of the laboratory medicine field, encouraging those who are interested to consider a career in laboratory science.  “We plant the seeds during school,” said Stokes.

Since its conception in 1999 as an integrated laboratory network of six hospitals, Alverno has since grown into one of the laboratory networks in the United State with more than 30 hospitals. A critical part of that growth has been a focus on the company culture and continually finding ways to captivate right-fit employees.

“We’ve attracted individuals who are patient-focused and who really care about the patient,” Michele Lange, Alverno’s Director of Human Resources, remarked. “We very much have a work family at Alverno, and we’ve worked to build a place where people enjoy being with a culture of warmth, welcome and positivity. We want to welcome more people into that fold.”

Stokes said Alverno is focused on finding local talent in the Northwest Indiana, Chicago, Lafayette, and Indianapolis areas.

Alverno owns and operates 32 hospital laboratories and supports other hospital laboratories in varying degrees throughout Illinois and Indiana, and features a central laboratory performing both clinical and anatomic pathology. In addition, Alverno supports the testing needs of thousands of physician offices. Alverno’s innovative, state-of-the-art laboratory offers cost effective testing and personalized customer service, with advanced technology and testing in Precision Medicine/Next-Gen Sequencing, toxicology, pain management and other specialty testing.
