Our History

Alverno Laboratories was established in 1999 as Alverno Clinical Laboratories, Inc. as an integrated laboratory network of six hospitals. In 2005, the joint venture between Franciscan Alliance and Provena Health established us as one of the first integrated networks serving two distinct healthcare systems with 18 hospitals, creating Alverno Clinical Laboratories, LLC. In 2008, Resurrection Healthcare joined the network to expand our coverage to 26 hospital laboratories, becoming Professional Clinical Laboratories, LLC. In 2011, Provena Health and Resurrection Healthcare joined to create Presence Health. In 2018 AMITA Health acquired Presence Health and so the AMITA Health hospital laboratories joined the Alverno network in August of 2019. As of 2023, we own or serve more than 30 hospital laboratories throughout the Franciscan Alliance and Ascension Illinois (formerly AMITA) health systems, along with other hospital laboratories.

Today we are known as Alverno Laboratories, returning to our Alverno faith-based heritage. After two decades we continue to adapt, grow, and achieve excellence. Our logo emphasizes the diverse and expert staff, without which we would not be the success we are today.

innovation

Innovation with a Vision

The modern meaning of innovation can be described as applying better solutions to meet new requirements or addressing unarticulated market needs.  COVID-19 was just such an unarticulated market need.  Prior to the pandemic, the need to build testing infrastructure rapidly was uncommon.  Alverno’s innovative way of doing business with partner companies instead of simply with “vendors”, provided partnerships that allowed us to secure multiple instruments and the needed reagents to begin in-house testing in March of 2020.

We have implemented the use of High Sensitivity Troponin throughout our hospital laboratory system for increased accuracy in diagnosing heart attacks, as well as new technology to diagnose Sepsis as much as 24 hours faster.

We introduced Digital Pathology to further improve turnaround times for patients who are waiting to hear about a potentially serious diagnosis. If a diagnosis of cancer is made, Alverno goes one step further with Precision Medicine allowing healthcare providers to identify the best treatment for their patient’s specific type of cancer. Partnering with IBEX in 2023, we are deploying Artificial Intelligence to help identify certain cancers, beginning with prostrate cancer.

By keeping our fingers on the pulse of innovation, we have been able to remain patient-focused, provide testing results sooner and save lives in the process.

Awards

Alverno is an award-winning laboratory. In 2014 we received the Chanute Prize for Team Innovation. We were also named Laboratory of the Year by ADVANCE Healthcare Network’s For the Laboratory magazine in 2016.
