N.O.W. Medical Laboratory Scientist
The Structure
Two days of the week will consist of online lectures and trainingmodules, to be completed remotely from the comfort of your home, guided by an Alverno clinical instructor. During the other three days of the week, trainees will work in a fully functioning laboratory alongside a trained medical technologist or medical laboratory technician for the practical portion of the program. Program candidates will also need to study on their own time outside of the program hours.
After Completion
- Participant can choose any open MT/MLT/Laboratory Scientist position at any of our locations
- Receive a pay raise at end of the 90-day training
- After six months, the employee will be evaluated for another pay
increase

- Bachelor’s Degree (BA or BS) in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or microbiology.
- Must commit to work for Alverno Laboratories for 2 years.
- If 2 years is not completed, the employee will be required to pay a portion of the evaluated value of the program which will be prorated based on length of completed service.

N.O.W. Microbiology Medical Laboratory Scientist
Alverno’s N.O.W. Microbiology Medical Laboratory Scientist program is an innovative 12-week paid microbiology specific learning program designed to prepare you to fulfill a microbiology medical laboratory scientist at our central laboratory in Hammond, Indiana on an accelerated basis.
The Structure
Participants will train in-person in our Microbiology department at our central laboratory in Hammond, IN. For the initial four weeks of training, two days a week will consist of working alongside trained personnel, learning how to process different clinical specimens and perform waived testing. The remaining three days will focus on wet lab instruction with a trained medical technologist or medical laboratory technician.
Following the initial four weeks of training, the Medical Laboratory Scientist will train for eight weeks and achieve proficiency at two plate reading benches, utilizing state-of-the-art technologies and their newly acquired knowledge.
Participants will also need to study on their own time outside of the program hours with provided material throughout the duration of the program.

N.O.W. Histology
Program Description
The Alverno N.O.W. Histology Program is an ASCP Route 2 on-the-job training format. This program is a six (6) month, full time, 100% FTE position dedicated to providing the candidate academic and practical experience in the field of Histology, with the shift being Monday – Friday 8:30am -5:00pm. After successful completion of the Alverno N.O.W. Histology Program, the candidate may be eligible to apply for any open histotechnician positions at Central Laboratory in Hammond, IN. After one year of full-time acceptable experience in histology, the histology trainee will be eligible to sit for the ASCP Board of Certification Histotechnician (HT) registry exam.

Program Requirements
- Preferred
- Have at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both)
- Associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both)
- Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both).
- Minimum
- High School diploma or equivalent and at least 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of academic credit from an accredited college or university in some type of clinical laboratory relevant science. Examples include any of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences.
- Internal Candidates
- Must meet the criteria of the Alverno Transfer Policy

The training program(s) are offered to staff members who meet the educational requirements. To participate, you must first be hired into a MT/MLT/Laboratory Scientist position at any Alverno Laboratories location. Please check our job openings under “Employment Opportunities” and apply for an open MT/MLT/Laboratory Scientist position at the location of your choosing.
Candidates are required to hold a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or microbiology. Other closely related degrees can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis after your application has been submitted.
The initial training lasts 12 weeks. Your participation will be full time, with two days each week of remote lecture and study, and three days in the laboratory performing testing that is related to the current study area.
You will learn medical laboratory math and basics, clinical chemistry, automated hematology, and coagulation to prepare you to be able to function fully in the automated lab. Additional bench time is needed to be proficient for reading hematology differential slides. Similarly, a separate six-week blood bank course is offered for students requiring that training.
a. Candidates from foreign universities must obtain a transcript review from a reviewer approved by the Alverno Laboratories Human Resources department.
a. In consideration for the resources that are provided for the training, participants are expected to commit to work for Alverno Laboratories for two years.
