How can I sign up for the N.O.W. Medical Laboratory Scientist/N.O.W. Microbiology Medical Laboratory Scientist program(s)?

The training program(s) are offered to staff members who meet the educational requirements. To participate, you must first be hired into a MT/MLT/Laboratory Scientist position at any Alverno Laboratories location. Please check our job openings under “Employment Opportunities” and apply for an open MT/MLT/Laboratory Scientist position at the location of your choosing.

What are the educational requirements to participate in the N.O.W. Medical Laboratory Scientist/N.O.W. Microbiology Medical Laboratory Scientist program(s)?

Candidates are required to hold a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or microbiology. Other closely related degrees can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis after your application has been submitted.

How long is the program?

The initial training lasts 12 weeks. Your participation will be full time, with two days each week of remote lecture and study, and three days in the laboratory performing testing that is related to the current study area.

What are the goals of the 12 weeks of training?

You will learn medical laboratory math and basics, clinical chemistry, automated hematology, and coagulation to prepare you to be able to function fully in the automated lab. Additional bench time is needed to be proficient for reading hematology differential slides. Similarly, a separate six-week blood bank course is offered for students requiring that training.

Can I participate in N.O.W. Medical Laboratory Scientist/N.O.W. Microbiology Medical Laboratory Scientist program(s) if my degree is from a foreign university?

a. Candidates from foreign universities must obtain a transcript review from a reviewer approved by the Alverno Laboratories Human Resources department.

After I complete the N.O.W. Medical Laboratory Scientist/N.O.W. Microbiology Medical Laboratory Scientist program, can I go to work at another lab?

a. In consideration for the resources that are provided for the training, participants are expected to commit to work for Alverno Laboratories for two years. If two years are not completed, the employee will be required to pay a portion of the evaluated program which will be prorated based on length of completed service.
