A career path in the medical laboratory field will open many doors for diverse opportunities. Just because you enter the industry as a lab assistant or tech does not mean that is where your career will stay. The lab offers positions beyond the testing environment into supervisory and management roles, administrative positions, and even the possibility to gain a position with a vendor partner selling and supporting laboratory instruments, software, and other products. Hands-On Learning: Real-World Clinical Experience
Alverno Laboratories partners with USF for students to learn hands on training in an operational laboratory. Our medical lab tech students complete their rotations at hospital laboratories managed by Alverno Laboratories in Crown Point, Dyer, and Michigan City or its central laboratory in Hammond, Indiana.
Franciscan Health – Medical Laboratory Science Program – Dyer, IN
This program is designed for students who complete three years of schooling at an affiliated/approved college or university who then transfer to the Medical Laboratory Science Program, which is a one year program that offers students the chance to train at an Alverno Laboratories hospital laboratory and its high volume central laboratory, both located in Northwest Indiana. The lab handles more than 20 million tests each year. Students work with the latest technologies and testing methods in the clinical lab.
Students will be busy with laboratory learning and classroom study on Monday through Friday for a full 8 hour day. Interns are expected to take frequent written and practical exams throughout the year. Upon completion of the internship, the intern will sit for a national board of certification exam. The Medical Laboratory Science Program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).
